A Rembrandt painting unseen in public for nearly 40 years sold for a record 20.2 million pounds ($33.2 million) at auction in London on Tuesday, the highest ever paid at auction for the 17th century artist.

  Christie’s said that “Portrait of a man, half-length, with his arms akimbo”, painted in 1658, fetched the 4th highest-price paid at auction for any old masters painting.

It was bought by an anonymous client bidding via telephone, Christie’s said.

  The record for a Rembrandt previously stood at 19.8 million pounds (then $29 million) in December 2000 for “Portrait of a lady aged 62.”

   The Rembrandt was the star lot in Christie’s auction of old masters and 19th century works, which have stood up relatively well during a financial downturn that has hit much of the rest of the world art market.

   “We are delighted to have been able to exhibit this masterful portrait for the first time in nearly forty years leading up to the auction, and to have seen it realize such a strong price that reflects its importance and magnitude,” said Richard Knight, international co-head of old masters at Christie’s.

  The last time the 1658 Rembrandt painting was sold at auction was in 1930 when it fetched 18,500 pounds. It later went into a series of private collections in the United States and was last seen in public at an exhibition in Detroit in 1970.

   The top price at auction for any old master picture is 49.5 million pounds ($77 million) for “The Massacre of the Innocents” by Peter Paul Rubens set at Sotheby’s in London in 2002.

The traditional Christmas opening day lasts in the saloon of the National Union of Ukrainian artists in Poltava. Famous masters of brush – Honored Ukrainian artists Nikolay Podhorny and Serhey Hnoevoy. the elder of Poltava painting Victor Trohimets – Milyutin, as well as young artists, Nataliya Korf, Vyacheslav Korkishko, Denis Horodnichy, Nataliya Dihtyar and others, who have already confidently declared of it.Orthodox priest father Yury, blessed this opening day. He said that the pictures, where we see the crosses on the domes of temples reminded us. The Godis with us. In the hope of Him, we will rejoice at festivals and life in spite of crisis.

Yury Samiylenko, the Chairman of Poltava organization of the National Union of Ukrainian Artists initiated Christmas and Easter exhibitions in Poltava. It was difficult to select pictures for the 1-st Christmas Exhibition (almost twenty years ago) – the artists almost had no thematic paintings.Now we see how much the artists have developed spiritually. Roman Ruhalov, a carver, took part in the 1-st, Christmas exhibition in Poltava, later he was invited to make an iconostasis for Uspensky Cathedral of Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra. He also carved the iconostasis for Poltava Krestovozdvizhensky monastery –one of the best, if not the best iconostasis in Ukraine.

Serhey Hnoevoy, the Honoured Artist of Ukraine, said about Yuri Pankevich`s work, presented in the exposure, that it tried to keep step with a high – quality icon. Therefore this master has a great future. Serhey noted that both Roman and Yury had started at Christmas exhibitions. Spirituality of the artists has developed to a considerable extent thanks to these exhibitions. It`s wonderful that tradition in progress. 

Artists E.Kurbal

He is inspired by life itself, nature and woman. Member of the National Union of Ukreinian Artists E.Kurbal presented Chamber Art festival to Poltavites. His personal exposure “My native land” Was held in Panas Myrny literary – memorial museum. Once Mr. Evheny, himself worked in Pekin, the centre of Chinese capital.

Evheny graduated from Poltava children art school, state art college and art – industrial institute in Kharkov, he works at Poltava art production enterprise. The famous artist has participated in regional, republican, foreign and international exhibitions.

Mr. Evheny works in icon – painting, monumental and easel – painting genre. A famous Poltava artist, a member of National Union of Ukreinian Artists Nikolay Tsys congratulated E.Kurbal on the occasion of the opening day of his 8th personal exhibition. His acquaintances and friends connoisseurs of art came to support the artist. The exposure in Panas Myrny museum will go on another few weeks.
